Dual Credit

• A high school student is officially enrolled in both their high school and a college at the same time.
• The course counts toward both high school graduation requirements and college credit (a “dual” purpose).
• Example: A student takes English C1000 at the local community college, and it fulfills their senior English requirement for high school and earns them college credit.
   

Concurrent Enrollment

• A high school student takes a college class only for college credit.
• It does not count toward high school graduation requirements—it’s “concurrent” because the student is still in high school while taking college classes, but the credits don’t overlap.
• Example: A student takes a college psychology class while still in high school. It goes on their college transcript only, not their high school transcript.
   

In short:

• Dual Enrollment = counts for both high school + college credit
• Concurrent Enrollment = counts for college credit only

Transferable College Credit

• These are credits that can be accepted by another college or university if a student transfers.
• Typically, general education courses (English, Math, History, etc.) or lower-division major prerequisites.
• In California, for example, community college courses that are listed in the CSU GE Breadth or IGETC patterns are transferable to UC/CSU systems.
• Example: A student takes English C1000 at a community college, and when they transfer to CSU Fresno or UC Davis, it counts toward their bachelor’s degree.
   

Non-Transferable College Credit

• These are credits that do not transfer to another institution, usually because the class is considered remedial, vocational, or specific to that college’s programs.
• They may still count toward a certificate program, associate degree, or prerequisites at that college, but they won’t move with the student to a university.
• Example: Intro to Welding 50A might count toward a welding certificate at the community college, but won’t transfer as credit toward a UC or CSU bachelor’s degree.
   

In short:

• Transferable = follows you to a university and counts toward a degree.
• Non-transferable = only counts at the college where you took it (useful for certificates, job skills, or meeting prerequisites).

When can students start taking dual credit courses?

Students may begin enrolling in dual credit courses the summer after 8th grade, before starting 9th grade.

Why can’t I take more than 11 units per semester?

High school students are limited to 11 college units per semester because they are considered special part-time students under state law. This cap helps students balance their high school and college coursework without being overwhelmed. Students who wish to enroll in more than 11 units must apply as full-time college students, which changes their status and may also result in additional costs such as tuition and fees.

Yes. If a student plans to take four or more dual credit courses over the course of high school, they must meet with a college counselor. This is not about the number of classes per semester—students are limited to 11 units per term—but rather about ensuring that courses align with college degree and transfer requirements. Meeting with a counselor helps students choose the right classes that will count toward their future goals.

Will the college contact me about my student’s progress?

No. Colleges consider early college credit students as adults, so they will not reach out to parents about grades, attendance, or progress. Parents cannot schedule conferences with college instructors, and instructors are not permitted to contact parents. In addition, high school counselors do not have access to students’ college grades or instructors, so it is the student’s responsibility to communicate directly with their professors and manage their coursework.

Credit Conversion

• 1-2 unit college course = 5 high school credits
• 3+ unit college course = 10 high school credits

So one 3+ unit college course equals a complete year of high school subject and fulfills A-G requirements. Example: HIST 017A (3 units) = 1 full year of high school U.S. History

Check with your counselor to confirm a course meets your graduation or A-G requirements. 

Please note that the following will begin with the Class of 2029 (current freshmen). The Class of 2026, 2027 and 2028 will not be eligible for a GPA bump through college courses (though will still be eligible if they meet the requirements with an AP course). 

• Weighted GPA Boost: Certain ECC courses receive a "bump" just like AP classes, improving your class rank and weighted GPA
• Approved Courses Only: Only courses listed on the official ECC course matrix qualify for bump credit
• Applied After Submission: Bump credit is added once official college transcripts are submitted to your counselor

"Bump" credit = An extra grade point (A = 4.02 instead of 4.0)

Who Can Participate?

• Open to all HJUHSD students
• 8th-grade students with principal permission
• Must have parent/guardian approval
• Follow community college enrollment guidelines

Course Limits

• Maximum 11 college units per semester
• Reduced high school schedule available (11th-12th grade only)
• Meet with college counselor if taking 4+ courses

1. Course Scheduling: ECC courses can be taken during or outside regular school day.
2. Track Enrollment: All ECC courses are monitored through an official tracking form submitted to your counselor
3. Submit Official Transcripts: Transcripts must be submitted by the 3rd Friday in August (Spring & Summer) or the 3rd Friday in January (Fall) via Parchment, college portals, or in person

Submit transcripts early to ensure high school scheduling and GPA updates. 

• Transfer Potential: Many ECC courses transfer to CSU, UC, and other colleges through CalGETC guidelines
• Verify Requirements: Students must check if courses meet their intended college's transfer and major requirements
• Get Guidance: Consult college counselors or use assist.org to confirm transferability

Just because a course earns high school credit doesn't guarantee it transfers to all colleges - research first!

• Permanent Academic Record: Once transcripts are submitted, all college courses and grades become permanent on your high school record
• No Cherry-Picking: Students cannot choose - all submitted courses count
• Pre-9th Grade Courses: ECC courses taken before 9th grade only accepted if completed the summer after 8th grade
• Bump Credit Partners: GPA bump credit only awarded for approved courses from Lemoore College & College of the Sequoias

What you take now become part of your permanent academic record - choose wisely!

• High School Counselor: Discusses course options, graduation planning, A-G requirements, and transcript deadlines. Students can use this form to request an appointment with their counselor to learn more about Early College Credit before applying. 
• College Counselor: Required for students taking 4+ ECC courses; handles course planning and college pathway alignment
• College Outreach Representative: Provides application assistance, onboarding support, and additional resources for success.
